The food we love

Take your time. The important words are highlighted.

1Meals of the day

A breakfast meal on a table

Food gives us energy, and it is one of the best parts of the day.

Many people eat three main meals a day. The first is breakfast, in the morning. People often eat bread, eggs, or fruit for breakfast. The second meal is lunch, in the middle of the day. The third is dinner, in the evening, and it is often the biggest meal.

Between meals, people sometimes have a small snack, like a piece of fruit or some nuts. What we eat changes from country to country and from family to family.

2Food from around the world

An evening meal from different cultures

Different countries have different food. In Italy, pasta and pizza are very popular. In many parts of Asia, people eat a lot of rice. In Mexico, corn and beans are common. Bread is eaten almost everywhere in the world.

Food can also taste very different. Some food is sweet, like cake and fruit. Some food is salty, like chips. And some food is spicy and hot, like a chili pepper. People like different tastes, and it is fun to try new food from other places.

3Food brings people together

Food is not only about eating. It is also about being together. In many families, people cook and eat dinner together. This is a good time to talk and to relax after a long day.

Many people have a favorite dish — a special food they love. Cooking for friends and family is a kind way to show that you care. So next time you eat, remember: food gives you energy, it tastes delicious, and it brings people together.
