A job advertisement tells you what a company needs. Read the two ads below carefully.
Weekend Server
What you have to do
- Take orders and bring food to the tables.
- You have to be friendly and quick.
- You have to wear a uniform. We give you the shirt.
- No experience necessary — we train you.
Summer Camp Helper
What you have to do
- Help children play sports and games outside.
- You have to like working with children.
- You can wear normal clothes.
- Good skills in soccer or swimming are useful, but not necessary.
2Two career profiles
An advertisement tells you about a job. A career profile tells you about a person. Here are two people talking about their work.
Sofia, 24
Veterinary assistant
“I work in an animal hospital. I help the doctor with cats and dogs. I start at 8 a.m. and I finish at 4 p.m., so it is a full-time job. The salary is not very big, but I love animals and I go home happy. You do not need many years of school for this job. You need patience and kind hands.”
Tomas, 31
Web designer
“I make websites for small companies. I work at home three days a week, so I do not have to travel much. I started with a part-time job when I was a student. That first job was small, but it gave me the experience I needed. Now I choose my own projects.”
3How to get the job
When you find a good advertisement, read it two times. Ask yourself: can I do this work? Do the days and hours fit my life?
Then you apply. Some companies want an email, and some want a form on a website. Always write your name clearly and check your spelling. Say what you can do, not only what you want.
If the company likes your message, they invite you to an interview. At the interview, arrive early, listen well, and answer in full sentences. You do not have to be perfect. You only have to show that you are honest and ready to learn.
