The Past Continuous

Past continuous (longer action) + when + past simple (shorter interruption). The continuous action was already in progress when something happened.

The three forms

Positive

was / were + verb-ing

She was studying all evening.
They were watching a film.

Negative

wasn’t / weren’t + verb-ing

He wasn’t listening to me.
We weren’t expecting visitors.

Question

Was / Were + subject + verb-ing?

Were you sleeping when I called?
Was she working late?

Three reasons to use the past continuous

1. Action at a specific past moment

Describe what was in progress at a particular point in the past. The action had already started before that moment and continued past it.

At midnight, she was still studying.

2. Interrupted action — when

The past continuous sets the background action; the past simple gives the interruption. The longer ongoing action uses was / were + -ing.

I was cooking when the alarm rang.

3. Parallel actions — while

Two actions happening at the same time in the past. Both clauses use was / were + -ing. The word while links them.

She was reading while he was cooking.

Past Continuous — in progress

I was reading a book.

They were having dinner when you arrived.

Use for the background action — already in progress when something else happens.

Past Simple — completed

I read a book last night.

You arrived while we were eating.

Use for the interrupting action or a single completed event in the past.

The one rule to remember

Zero conditional = always true — use present + present for facts and habits that have no exceptions. First conditional = real future possibility — use present + will for things that could genuinely happen. And in either conditional, the if-clause never takes will.
