Why Can't We Stop?

What to do: Read this short extract from the unit article. Then answer the questions and tap Check Answers. (Read the full article using the link above!)

Most teenagers use social media every day. Every time you get a like or a notification, your brain releases a little dopamine — a chemical that makes you feel good. The feeling is pleasant, but it doesn't last, so you check your phone again and again.

Little by little, using social media too much can become addictive. Scientists say teenage brains are especially sensitive to these rewards, because they are still developing.

1. Likes and notifications release a little ______ in the brain.
2. Using social media too much can become ______.
3. How often do most teenagers use social media?

Screen-Time Talk

What to do: Listen two times. Then complete the sentences and answer the questions.
Audio 2Mia and Leo talk about phones and sleep

Mia: You look tired. Are you okay?

Leo: Yeah, I just didn't sleep well. I was on my phone until two in the morning.

Mia: Again? You should turn it off earlier.

Leo: I know. I start watching one video, and then I scroll for hours. It's so addictive.

Mia: Same here. If I keep my phone in my room, I never sleep on time. Now I charge it in the kitchen.

Leo: Does it really help?

Mia: Definitely. If I don't see notifications, I relax more. And we talk more face-to-face at dinner now.

Leo: Maybe I'll try that. I really want to feel less tired.

1. Leo was on his phone until ______ in the morning.
2. Mia now charges her phone in the ______.
3. They now talk more ______ at dinner.

Healthy Tech Advice

What to do: Write a short "healthy technology" guide (about 80–100 words) using first conditionals. There is no automatic score — use the checklist.
Example: "Do you want to feel better? If you turn off your notifications, you won't check your phone so often. If you keep your phone out of your bedroom, you will sleep better. If you meet friends face-to-face, you will feel happier. And if you follow positive accounts, social media will be more fun. Small changes make a big difference!"
