Running Dictation

A running dictation is a fun, interactive classroom activity that helps students practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Here’s how it works:

Preparation: Print a short text (like a paragraph) and place it somewhere in the room, usually on a wall or outside the classroom. For this example, the text could be about a vacation destination.

Teams: Divide the class into pairs or small teams. Each team has one “runner” and one “writer.”

Running: The runner’s job is to go to the text, read it, and memorize as much as they can. They then run back to their partner and dictate what they remember.

Writing: The writer listens and writes down the dictated information. The runner can go back and forth as many times as needed to complete the text.

Switch roles: After one round, you can switch roles or give a new text for another round.

Checking: Once all teams have finished, compare their written texts to the original to see how accurately they captured the information.
