Daily Routines

Lesson Title: Daily Routines – B2 Speaking Practice
Level: B2
Length: 45 minutes
Focus: Speaking fluency, vocabulary expansion, extended answers, and structured responses for the Maturita oral exam.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson students will be able to describe daily routines in detail using varied vocabulary, compare weekday and weekend habits, extend answers with linking expressions, and deliver a short structured response similar to a Maturita speaking task.

Warm-up discussion

Write the prompt on the board: “How similar are your weekdays and weekends?”

Students work in pairs and discuss:

  • What time they usually wake up
  • Their morning routine
  • Their school/work schedule
  • Activities in the evening
  • Differences between weekdays and weekends

Encourage students to answer in complete sentences rather than short responses.

Example model:
“On weekdays I usually wake up at around seven because I have to get ready for school. After that I have breakfast and check my phone before leaving the house.”

Vocabulary activation

Write three categories on the board.

Morning routine

Daily responsibilities

Free time activities

Students work in small groups and list as many expressions as possible.

Possible language students should produce:

  • get dressed
  • commute to school/work
  • attend classes
  • have lunch with friends
  • do homework
  • work out / go to the gym
  • relax / watch series
  • scroll through social media

Then ask each group to create three full sentences describing their own daily routine using these expressions.

Example:
“I usually commute to school by bus, which takes about twenty minutes.”

Speaking activity – Daily Routine Interview

Students interview a partner using structured questions. Each student should ask follow-up questions.

Questions:

  1. What does a typical weekday look like for you?
  2. What part of your daily routine do you enjoy the most? Why?
  3. Is there anything in your routine you would like to change?
  4. How does your routine change on weekends?
  5. Do you think your daily habits are healthy?

Students should take short notes, because they will present their partner later.

Partner presentation

Each student briefly presents their partner’s routine to the class.

  • Example structure for the board: “___’s daily routine is quite busy. They usually wake up at… After that they… In the afternoon they typically… In the evening they like to… On weekends their routine is different because…”

This stage practices reported information, which is useful for fluency and exam speaking.

Maturita-style speaking task

Students answer the following prompt individually.

Prompt:
“Describe your daily routine and explain how it affects your lifestyle and productivity.”

Students should speak for about one minute.

Suggested structure for students:

  • introduction to their routine
  • description of morning / afternoon / evening
  • explanation of why their routine works or does not work
  • conclusion

Example model answer:
“My daily routine is quite structured because I like to plan my time carefully. I usually wake up at around seven and start the day with breakfast and checking my emails. During the day I attend classes and study in the afternoon. In the evening I try to relax by watching a series or spending time with friends. I think this routine helps me stay productive, although sometimes I would like to have more free time.”

Warm-Up Discussion

Work with a partner. Discuss the questions and give full answers.

  1. What time do you usually wake up on weekdays?
  2. What is the first thing you do in the morning?
  3. How busy are your weekdays compared to weekends?
  4. What do you usually do in the evening?
  5. Do you prefer a fixed routine or a flexible schedule? Why?

Try to give detailed answers. Ask your partner follow-up questions.
