Health and Fitness
Objective: By the end of this unit, students will be able to discuss health habits and exercise routines, use vocabulary related to health-related terms and exercise activities, comprehend articles about health and fitness, engage in dialogues about health issues and exercise tips, and write about their daily exercise routine.
Materials Needed:
- Pictures or visuals of exercise activities and health-related terms
- Sample articles about health and fitness
- Audio recordings of dialogues about health issues and exercise tips
- Writing materials for students
Duration: 90 minutes per week (divided into two 45-minute sessions)
Exploring Health Habits
Session 1: Vocabulary and Speaking Practice (45 minutes)
- Warm-Up (5 minutes):
- Begin with a discussion about students’ daily health habits, including diet, exercise, and sleep.
- Teaching Vocabulary (15 minutes):
- Introduce vocabulary related to health-related terms and exercise activities using pictures or visuals.
- Practice pronunciation and review the meanings of the words.
- Speaking Practice (15 minutes):
- Pair up students and have them discuss their typical exercise routines and any health goals they have.
- Encourage students to share tips and strategies for staying healthy.
- Writing Task (10 minutes):
- Assign students to write a list of their favorite exercise activities and any health-related goals they want to achieve.
- Provide sentence starters or prompts to guide their writing.
Session 2: Reading and Listening (45 minutes)
- Reading Activity (15 minutes):
- Distribute articles about health and fitness.
- Have students read the articles individually and identify key information about maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
- Listening Exercise (15 minutes):
- Play audio recordings of dialogues about health issues and exercise tips.
- Have students listen and note down important details such as workout routines and dietary advice.
- Discussion (15 minutes):
- Lead a class discussion based on the reading and listening activities, asking students to share their thoughts on the benefits of exercise and healthy living.
Exploring Exercise Routines
Session 1: Speaking Practice and Vocabulary Review (45 minutes)
- Speaking Practice (20 minutes):
- Divide students into small groups and have them discuss their daily exercise routines in more detail.
- Encourage students to share specific exercises they do and how often they engage in physical activity.
- Vocabulary Review (15 minutes):
- Review the vocabulary related to health-related terms and exercise activities covered in the previous session.
- Conduct a quick quiz or game to reinforce vocabulary retention.
- Writing Task (10 minutes):
- Ask students to write a paragraph describing their typical daily exercise routine, including the types of exercises they do and how they feel afterward.
- Encourage them to use descriptive language and provide examples.
Session 2: Writing Task and Review (45 minutes)
- Writing Task (20 minutes):
- Assign students to revise and expand their previous writing about their daily exercise routine based on feedback from the teacher or peers.
- Encourage them to add more details about their experiences and motivations for exercising.
- Peer Review (15 minutes):
- Have students exchange their revised writing with a partner for peer review.
- Encourage constructive feedback on clarity, coherence, and descriptive language.
- Review and Reflection (10 minutes):
- Wrap up the unit by reviewing key vocabulary, phrases, and concepts covered in the past two weeks.
- Encourage students to reflect on their exercise habits and share any new insights or goals they gained during the unit.
Homework: Assign students to research a new exercise or fitness activity they are interested in and write a short report about it, including information about its benefits and how to get started.
Assessment: Assess students’ participation in speaking activities, their ability to comprehend and produce vocabulary related to health and fitness, their understanding of articles about health and exercise, and the detail and reflection in their written descriptions of their exercise routines. Use informal assessments such as observation, class discussions, and written assignments to gauge student progress.
