Unit 3 – Hobbies and Interests

Leisure Activities

Objective: By the end of this unit, students will be able to discuss hobbies and interests, use vocabulary related to hobbies, leisure activities, likes, and dislikes, comprehend texts about different hobbies, engage in dialogues about hobbies and interests, and write about their favorite hobbies and why they enjoy them.

 

Materials Needed:

  1. Pictures or visuals of various hobbies and leisure activities
  2. Sample texts about different hobbies
  3. Audio recordings of dialogues about hobbies and interests
  4. Writing materials for students

Duration: 90 minutes per week (divided into two 45-minute sessions)

 

Introduction to Hobbies and Interests

Session 1: Vocabulary and Speaking Practice (45 minutes)

  1. Warm-Up (5 minutes):
    • Begin with a brainstorming activity where students list their hobbies and interests.
  2. Teaching Vocabulary (15 minutes):
    • Introduce vocabulary related to hobbies, leisure activities, likes, and dislikes using pictures or visuals.
    • Practice pronunciation and review the meanings of the words.
  3. Speaking Practice (15 minutes):

Session 2: Reading and Listening (45 minutes)

  2. Listening Exercise (15 minutes):
    • Play audio recordings of dialogues about hobbies and interests.
    • Have students listen and note down the hobbies mentioned in the conversations.
  3. Discussion (15 minutes):
    • Lead a class discussion based on the reading and listening activities, asking students to share their thoughts on the different hobbies mentioned and whether they would like to try any of them.

Speaking and Writing Practice

Session 1: Speaking Practice and Vocabulary Review (45 minutes)

  1. Speaking Practice (20 minutes):
    • Divide students into small groups and have them discuss their favorite hobbies and interests in more detail.
    • Encourage students to share stories or anecdotes related to their hobbies.
  2. Vocabulary Review (15 minutes):
    • Review the vocabulary related to hobbies and leisure activities covered in the previous session.
    • Conduct a quick quiz or game to reinforce vocabulary retention.
  3. Writing Task (10 minutes):
    • Ask students to choose one of their favorite hobbies and write a paragraph explaining why they enjoy it.
    • Encourage them to use descriptive language and provide specific examples.

Session 2: Writing Task and Review (45 minutes)

  1. Writing Task (20 minutes):
    • Assign students to revise and expand their previous writing about their favorite hobbies based on feedback from the teacher or peers.
    • Encourage students to add more details about their experiences and emotions related to their hobbies.
  2. Peer Review (15 minutes):
    • Have students exchange their revised writing with a partner for peer review.
    • Encourage constructive feedback on clarity, coherence, and descriptive language.
  3. Review and Reflection (10 minutes):
    • Wrap up the unit by reviewing key vocabulary, phrases, and concepts covered in the past two weeks.
    • Encourage students to reflect on their favorite hobbies and share any new interests they discovered during the unit.

Homework: Assign students to explore a new hobby or leisure activity outside of class and write a short reflection on their experience, including why they chose the activity and what they enjoyed about it.

 

Assessment: Assess students’ participation in speaking activities, their ability to comprehend and produce vocabulary related to hobbies and leisure activities, their understanding of texts and audio recordings about hobbies, and the clarity and detail of their written descriptions of their favorite hobbies. Use informal assessments such as observation, class discussions, and written assignments to gauge student progress.
